This Victorian house was built in 1856 by Nathaniel Ely of native brick and was used as a stopover on the Underground Railroad to evacuate Southern slaves. Of architectural interest, the quoins and dentil moldings are 18th century in feeling but other embellishments echo 19th century styles. The veranda boasts bold decorative detail & the balustrade with enlarged finials. Floor to ceiling windows are Italianate in influence and the rounded windows on the second story are modified Gothic Revival. From the colorful Brussels carpeting that sweeps through much of the first floor and up the straight steep staircase to the second story, to the deep velvet draperies that span the eleven feet from floor to ceiling, it possesses both the aura of the Victorians and the ambiance of the house when Ethan Ely was alive.
